I read everything a couple of times. It was inspiring- thanks for sharing. I have nothing to add. Your friend summed everything up perfectly. He is a great friend and if you are able to follow his advice you'll be fine. Sounds like your not lacking in the poker skills department, you just need to reign in the psychological effects and the management stuff.

Let's just say that, if anything, when under-rolled, I became more aggressive (most likely incorrectly). I probably should have been playing a tighter, suboptimal game just to get my feet wet and control the variance.

Stick with one game, whatever you prefer most, I'd say 10/20 6max as an example. Dont jump around in NL and limit and SNGs and MTTs just stick with one thing. If you do want to play something different then just do it for fun but not serious money. Are you playing for fun or money? if you are playing for money then pick a game and specialise in it.

From there just set a certain number of hands and a certain winrate/bankroll before you move up. 600BB or so is pretty good these days, even if you have a job it is still not fun to go on a large downswing so it is better to be conservative in this area.

It is also good to make withdrawals every once in a while just so you see the rewards.

If you have a decent winrate over a large sample size say (~1.5bb/100 over 50k+) and your bankroll is large enough for the next limit then take a jump.

Dont do things like follow fish into bigger games, the larger games are significantly more aggressive and they do cause you to tilt more especially when you shouldn't be there. I have jumped up to 50/100 a few times chasing a weak player and it is very annoying to lose a few thousand in 20min or so then you feel that if I only stay a bit longer I can gain it back. It is just not a good thing to do.

Don't be too keen to jump up based on envy. It is easy to get carried away reading about stories of other players who are playing very high limits and making huge amounts of money. Just worry about your own progress and be realistic, people who don't have experience and results behind them run good for a bit then get knocked back down.

Also I wouldn't worry about trying to become a world class player just enjoy the game and make money.
