Big D hit it on the head. I have also noticed the with my Scientific Atlanta 8300HD, that if I switch to a HD channel before switching to an SD channel I get black bars. All I have to do is switch to an SD channel, let it show up and then click right back and it is fine.

Nicksdad -
It depends on the settings in the box. It's possible there is a "pass-through" setting that simply sends the picture through at whatever its native resolution is. More likely is that you have it set to send everything through at 1080i. So if you're watching a non-HD show, for instance, the box would take the 480i signal and convert it to 1080i and send it to your tv. OPs problem is likely that he has this setting at 480i, so the box is DOWNconverting HD shows to crappy SD quality. |

[/ QUOTE ] There's a button on the remote labeled "Format" That button toggles between the various modes (720p stretch, 720p pillar box, 720p zoom, then the same settings for 1080i. The pillar box mode shows 4:3 content with black bars on the side. The other two modes stretch 4:3 content to fill a 16:9 screen.) |

I could be wrong, but I'm not sure that component inputs support 720p. Don't you have to use HDMI inputs to get HD? [/ QUOTE ] Component definitely supports 720p and 1080i. 1080p over component is technically possible, but disabled for copy protection reasons. |

What I really want to know is if there's any noticeable difference between using component vs HDMI cables for 720p/1080i viewing....
