I posted because a couple of the middle to late position players (seats 1 and 2) were muttering about a "strange raise."

Mental note: seats 1 and 2 don't understand poker. Remember this for all time and all future strong draws.

Although highly unlikely, the flop raise has the added advantage of perhaps scaring off any extremely passive holder of the Ac with a rag.. but I'm guessing that your river caller might have been holding out for the nut flush.

The doubters probably thought your raise was strange because of the flush board.. and that it apparently didn't scare anyone off.

The raise did cut the field down from 7 preflop to 3 or 4 to see the turn. (I don't remember.) I don't think the A [img]/images/graemlins/club.gif[/img] ever folds to the raise in this game with a pot this big, but underpairs to the K with no club probably do fold. I think that hands we are concerned with that might fold are Ax, where the x might make two pairs that beat us when the A hits. I don't think there are many other hands that the flop raise gets to fold that we don't beat if we hit an A, the flush or the gutshot broadway. Therefore, in the end, I think the raise is more for the free card than it is for protection. Even if they put me on AK, I don't suspect anyone with a K folds this for even 2 bets given the size of the pot.

In any event, I was surprised that the free card raise was not considered to be more standard than I assumed it to be by this group. Even though my draws weren't to the nuts, it seemed that they were strong enough to warrant a free card raise attempt in this situation.

Good point. I have been playing a lot of 6-max where that play applies less. In a passive full ring game it has a lot of value.
