I did some work for an Internet Startup years ago. Their concept was similar to Amazons. They raised around 6.5 Mil which carried them for about 4 years. Eventually they went out of business. They spent 100's of thousands on software development alone.

You better have a rock solid concept if your going after family money for startup.

It really depends on what you doing to determine how much you will need.

I would start working on it while you are in school. When you graduate there is most likely going to be more pressure to have to work full time. College years are a great time to start work on something like this. Also you are bound to meet people while you are in school that you can partner up with.
