[/ QUOTE ] Are your journals a mix of grade on and write on? My school, if you graded on, you didn't have to write on. The catch was you wouldn't know your 1L rankings until well after the deadline for the write on. My GPA was high enough that I knew I was going to grade on, but I knew a couple people who were on the edge and gambled, didn't grade on, and thus missed the write on deadline. Suckage. |

Re: Done with law school
Can someone explain all of this journal business to me (as a probable law student)? I'm actually meeting with someone from DU's law school next week and I'm looking for things to ask them about... Plus I just want to know. Thanks.

Re: Done with law school
Tron,
i'm a 1L, so i'm just going through the journal application process now. someone with more experience can correct/supplement what i have to say, but: journals are student run organizations that publish articles written by legal scholars (usually law professors, but sometimes other lawyers or judges who have written something) as well as pieces written by students. getting on a journal generally looks good on your resume, so students compete to earn spots on them. if you make it on a journal, your job consists of a)writing a paper, which you hope will get selected to be published in the journal and b) other work, usually consisting of editing articles that other authors have submitted to the journal. above you saw one poster talk about write-on and grade-on applications. this depends on the school/journal, but basically it refers to whether you can simply earn your way on by getting good grades, or whether you must compete in a competition (which will consist of writing a paper and sometimes some other stuff) to get on. |

Re: Done with law school
I recommend a journal to everyone.
It not only looks good on your resume but can actually be helpful in learning how to cite cases and improving your editing skills. You also typically need to write your own paper, which can get published, and, if nothing else can improve your own writing and editing skills. Which bar are you taking OP? GL! |

[/ QUOTE ] Oregon. 75% pass rate for first timers; I like those odds. Doesn't mean that my summer isn't going to suck, though. I also recommend journals. Aside from being almost indispensable on a resume if you want a decent firm job, being on the journal forced me to get my major paper out of the way during 2L when most put it off until 3L. Plus, knowing how to cite makes all the other papers you might have to write a piece of cake. |
