I used to bowl in a league. The girl who worked the snack bar was really cute. I had a GF at the time, so never approached her.

A few months later, my buddies decide to go to a strip club to celebrate one of the guy's birthdays. One of the strippers was really cute, but looked sort of familiar. Finally, it clicked. It was the snack bar girl! (She wasn't much of a dancer, but she was very flexible. She would put both her legs completley behind her head.)

I hadn't been to the bowling alley in a while, so we went to the bowling alley to see if she was there. No such luck. Apparently, she had left a few weeks earlier.

It's easy.

At work these people are busy doing their jobs.

When they are not at work they don't want to be rude and ignore you, so they smile and acknowledge your existence.

A couple weeks ago I saw a really good McDonald's commercial that hit on some of these notes. Two guys who didn't give a damn about each other met and pretended to give a damn, while actually ripping on each other and looking bored to death.
