His letter also expressed concern about market barriers for alternative fuels. It asks the CEOs, "What steps are you taking or do you intend to take to speed up the deployment of E85?" (E85 fuels, such as ethanol, are alcohol/fuel mixtures.)

[/ QUOTE ]
Market barriers. Hahahaha.

[/ QUOTE ]

Yes, market barriers like, "Nobody wants them."

[/ QUOTE ]
Corn farmers are loving this, especially given the subsidies (on top of the other subsidies!) for producing ethanol.

Actually, when you consider how much gas you can buy per hour of work, gas prices are significantly lower today than almost any other time in history.

This is indeed good stuff. Next, I think the politicians should draft a letter demanding that theoretical physicists explain how and when they plan to increase the speed of light "speed limit."

Among other things, Kucinich asks, "Would you object to a federal law phasing in temperature-compensated gasoline sales in the United States?"

[/ QUOTE ]

Can someone translate this for me into layman terms? It sounds like he wants the government to pay the oil companies money to lower their prices in the summer. Or have the government fix the prices when they are too high.

[/ QUOTE ]

Gasoline expands when it is hot. It contracts when it is cold. If you buy a gallon of gas when it is 35 degrees, you actually get more gasoline than if it were 90 degrees. Basically, he would want to gave gasoline pumps charge you based on how much product you are actually getting, which would require measuring the temperature of gasoline when sold and factoring this in somehow. I think I read the details about this, and the effect was pretty minimal (maybe a few cents if you fill up during some extreme heat). This is clearly just another way that Dennis the Menace can stick it to those evil oil boys.

Someone needs to grill Kucinich on how he feels about the obscene profit the government makes on gasoline. The government makes more on the sale of a gallon of gas than Exxon does.

Is that really true? I guess it is given profit margins reported by the likes of Exxon. I've stated many times on this forum that the taxes that governments levy on gasoline are regressive taxes that hurt the less affluent the most.

Last week on my hiatus in California I was paying between $3.79 and $3.90 a gallon if memory serves correctly. Don't get me wrong, I really like California alot and I was treated well there but it was expensive to drive around. I hadn't been there in awhile and got a little "sticker shock" from gas prices there.

I realize this is from the oil bidness, but it provides some factual information that is intersting and easily verified elsewhere.

This has to be the dumbest thing I've ever read. You're saying that the "average" American in the winter doesn't have enough money to buy food? Why aren't they all starving to death?

Another really dumb thing is that Americans will spend 4x more on electricity in the winter than in the summer. $300/month on electricity? I have a 3000 sq foot house in fricking Texas and thats about what I pay. What kind of poor person can afford that on $600/month?

And do they not have air conditioning? My electric bill is a LOT higher in the summer. Also, where is the itemization for hookers and blow?
