After a lot of arguing...the 2nd best hand wanted the dealer to admit he was wrong or give him $100. Later discussion at the table pretty much agreed that the player shouldn't have gotten his cards back.

If I am in the pot, the "push the hand back to the guy who forgot he posted and doesn't owe anything" doesn't bother me.

But I figure his pot equity went from 0% to 79%.

I am a professional dealer/floor/tournament director at a well respected joint.

If I am dealing and this happened, i would say "Are you folding?" and not pull his cards in. At that point they usually say "oh oops" and pull them back. That is acceptable (at least in our house). If he tosses them in toward a muck or throws them in the middle, I will take them and say "FOLD". If people react because of the fold, his money stays in the pot and he cannot get his cards back.

If he tosses them in toward me, and no one reacts, and then he wants them back, I will say "FLOOR". Floor will give him cards back (only if there was no action) and tell him/her to pay attention.

Dealer should give the guy his hand back. This is standard, especially when the guy is just coming into the game. People are often not paying close attention their first hand because they are getting chips, taking off their coat, etc. It's really terrible to get mad at the guy, especially after the fact.

No one really says anything as the play continues 4 handed.

They should speak up at the beginning, or live with the result.

I was in the WSOP $500+$50 on Saturday at Caesars and the BB tossed his cards in. They did not hit the muck and the dealer placed his hand on them and said to the BB "Do you mean to fold?" In the hand, everyone folded to the button and he quietly limped and the SB folded. No one complained and I thought the dealer handled it correctly. He said that if they had hit the muck then they would be dead but that at Caesar's it's a courtesy afforded to the BB.

Its relevant for a couple of reasons. Though beginner may be in a bigger game, you will find a lot of beginners in the $2/$4 game and it makes more sense to be giving more leeway in game with beginners. Also doing this in a $smaller game is less likely to raise objectioon (in part because more of the players are likely beginners themselves and appreciate the leeway).

Somebody rasied preflop, but I can't remember if it was 2nd best hand or someone else. Everyone kind of laughed when the guy who almost folded now called the raise ("oh, now you like the cards"), but he was getting about 7 to 1.
