Today my girlfriend called me an anarchist for complaining about government interference in our lives.

The fear of having Democracy Demons stealing my Pepsi and forcing me to drink Coke must be getting to me.

It's silly that people think that is some kind of an argument. They are merely stating a fact, but they think that because 'anarchist' has such a negative connotation, they think it will make you try to distance from it.

When you oppose govt interference and central planning in a certain area, then you are saying that you want more market anarchy in that area. Maybe you can elighten you girlfriend about the natural order of market anarchy (for example in industries that we already see today, such as ipods, pencils, food, websites, etc).

[/ QUOTE ]

I wonder why people think so poorly of anarchists.....

I thought you were a statist mosdef?

I'm also a heterosexual, but I think some women are disgusting. Also, the women I think are disgusting didn't turn me gay.

Similarly, I can believe in the regrettable necessity of some kind of state and still abhor the actions of any given state. Also, the disgusting action of any state does not make me an anarchist.

The banning of private health care in Canada.

Government promises to deliver health care. Government writes up shiny new Canada Health Act insisting that all citizens are entitled to Access to health care. Government happily accepts gigantic bags of money to fund said promise. Government fails to provide enough services and people get "access" to health care 8 months after they need it. Government decries calls for introduction of private health care that would increase accessiblility on the basis that "poor people wouldn't get any more access". La dee f*cking da. Where in the Canada Health Act did it say that the rules don't apply to rich people?

Girlfriend is a doctor and is sensitive to these sorts of complaints.

Is it still illegal to seek private treatment if a public option is available (albeit likely with a gigantic waiting list)?

If it is and she's objecting to just the possibility of seeking private care then that's really quite horrific.

The way it works is:

Hospitals and physicians are privately owned and operated enterprises that provide services.

The government pays the physicians for services provided on a fixed fee basis. If a hospital or doctor allows patients to pay them directly in an amount greater than the fixed fee, then they are deemed to be ineligible to receive public funding. So you don't get locked up if you're a doctor that charges out-of-pocket to the patients, but you are put at a severe competitive challenge compared to the publicly funded hospitals. There are very view places to provide private services because the subsidies to the publicly preferred hospitals are prohibitive.
