Agreed, I wish they taught more of the myths in high school. They really are some of the highest testaments to the human spirit.

There's always Gibbon's "Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire", but it's hardly for the feint of heart and it's not a great intro to the subject, I think. You probably need a general overview before tackling this one, but it is considered THE classical work on the subject, even if there have been some disagreements with it over the last 250 years.
