I'd second Catch 22 and 1984 as classics

More currently is Sam Harris's "Letter to a Christian Nation"
and Tom Wessels' "Myth of a Sustainable Future"

edit: the last two were "Important" maybe more than best.

While I enjoy many of the classics, I'm going to steer clear of them and offer you something a bit more contemporary, alhough it's set in medieval times.

Pillars of the Earth

I love this book so much that about every two or three years, I reread it, and it's like new again.

Vonnegut - great modern american thinker/writer
1984 - classic, must-read

NATURE - EMERSON
WALDEN and CIVIL DISOBEDIENCE - THOREAU
LEAVES OF GRASS - WHITMAN
THE AUTOBIOGRAPHY OF MALCOLM X - ghostwritten by Haley

Anything by DT SUZUKI
Select Ancient Japanese Koans

The best? Too hard to pinpoint.

Edited b/c I forgot to mention Camus' THE PLAGUE.
