B&M casinos benefit from the online game..not basing that on facts just a loose observation. Mohegan is rebuilding their poker room. There are always tourneys running in any decent casino. Turnouts are larger, rooms are expanding..all because the game has become pop culture..Moneymaker's win and the coverage of it has made poker what it is today. So I dont see why casinos would want to crush the online game. I have to think nearly all newbies get their feet wet with online games and small home games..Once they get comfortable in those settings, off to the casinos they go for the big payday.

My concern with the bots echo what has already been said..While Im sleeping, the bots are exploiting the bottom level of the pyramid. Assuming this is eliminated or controlled, there will always be plenty of money coming in to make it to the top of the pyramid..

Both online and B&M benefit(ed) from poker being on TV. B&M also benefit by outlawing play online.

I really think this is a short term benefit and a long term loss for them. While as soon as party poker shut out americans, B&M cardrooms boomed, the micro-stakes that online poker rooms can offer while people start to get comfortable playing poker, certainly provide much more sustainable groth for B&M cardrooms.

most of these new "professionals" fizzle out after a year or two.

a real expert will have the skill to beat the games he/she plays in, and also the disipline to leave a game that's too tough and find a better game.

anyone intrested in actually studying and thinking about the game, and puts in the experience will have the ability to become an expert, and if so can choose to play for a living.

The Internet poker side of things will be legalized again, more pros will make a living off the game which will in turn attract more newbies, which will in turn keep the game alive and well, at least in the intermediate term.

[/ QUOTE ]The internet will not be legalized anytime soon in the US as the B&M Casino and relgious right lobby will prevent it. Ask gun control advocates how easy it is to get past the NRA.
And new entrants generate pros - not the other way around as you put it.
The internet poker trend is on the downside and Frist's bill was an accelerant to a process that might of lasted several more years.

[/ QUOTE ]

These are not analogous. Online poker will become legal once the more powerful and established gaming industry has its way with it. The current legislation is an example of how powerful traditional established B&Ms are in Washington, not the far right. This is more like the NRA pushing a ban on new types of weapons because gun dealers fear the competition. Once they figure out how to sell the new weapons, and how to squish competition, they will be in favor of selling the new weapons. And so it will be will online poker. Once they figure out how to profit from it, they will support it.

Great post, Heisenb3rg, very interesting stuff.

One issue I have: the potential market for online poker has never been close to "saturated" per se, mostly because of legal barriers, but also because some markets are simply untapped. If key legal barriers are removed, or new markets explode, isn't it possible that online poker could enjoy an entirely new surge of popularity? Perhaps what we've seen so far is just the dress rehearsal? I don't know if this scenario will occur or not, BUT there is certainly a whole lot of money to be made if it does, which means there will be people working to make it happen.

By banning poker online, some still had a taste for the poker bug and now B & M are seeing some flow of talented off the internet. Truthfully, I agree we are in stage 2, but I do not think we will move past it in our lifetime
