Funny you say that, as that is exactly what happened in Metroid. That was one of the hooks of the original game -- the player had no real idea of Samus' gender until the end of the game, when she took off her suit. Saying that her gender was established from the start is flat-out wrong.

You got me there. I didn't know for sure, but I always assumed since it was so well known, it was introduced at the start of the first game or something.
