My parents made us attend Catholic Church because although they weren't particularly Catholic, they said that they wanted to give us a point of reference and whether we chose to stick with that or go in an entirely different direction was completely up to us.

In the end, I think it was beneficial because I found myself agreeing and disagreeing with certain things which led to a lot of discussion and though that might not have otherwise been there. In the end, none of us attend church, but I think it helped give them a good reference point when teaching us about morality and faith.

I think I would take a similar approach with my children, in that I would expose them to some sort of religion as a way of introducing them to faith in general. I will not subject them to sunday mass when they are too young to know what the hell is going on as my parents sometimes did. Maybe we'll just designated an hour each sunday or saturday as religion/morality discussion time and i can sort of teach them about various religions, belief systems, etc.

Basically, I think something is better than nothing. If the kid grows up and completely disagrees with 100% of the teachings of a particular religion, then good. at least it wasn't an area of his life that went without consideration.

How do you raise a kid atheist? As a kid, a big motivator for being a good person was my belief in god. It seems really weird to teach your kid something opposite you believe. Incongruencies between what you say and do will show, and will undermine your kids belief in you. Teaching your kid that there is no god seems like it would be very problematic for a kid. Discuss

I'm atheist by the way.

I plan on exposing my kids to religion if they have questions about it and letting them make up their own minds. I'm not going to go out of my way to teach them that there is no God (or that I'm not sure if there is a God). Either way, I don't see what it has to do with being a good person.

I'm pretty much an atheist, and my son will be raised as a Christian. Mainly because I plan on being a lazy parent.

You don't have to teach children right and wrong.

There should be no authority figures, including Old Testament God, Santa Claus, you, and ideally their teachers.

If they WANT to go to church with the grandparents or whatever, let them obviously.

Read a book about Summerhill.

questions and responcetoo all if you dont mind)
what if your child takes to the idea, of any religon for that matter, will you support them.

as a christian, i think raising a kid to believ that God is a big mean guy who tells them what to and not to do would leave them closeminded. Your are there parent, and can tell them what you believe is right and wrong until they can think for themselves and dicuss it with you, the children will hopfully be yours for your whole life.

my father was a militarty man, we basically never went to church unitl i was 15, and even then it only lasted a year or so. But his word was gospel, and he dicussed with my why he said no to this, and no to that... instead of just saying no
