daryn, I know "Welsh" isn't a slur, but using it to refer to not paying a bet probably is. e.g. "Jew" isn't a slur but you can't refer to bargaining on price as "Jewwing down".

HB, "Chiseler" is a great word I'm going to start using, but it looks like it can apply to any sort of flim-flam artist, not only to reneging on a bet.

TylerD, I believe both forms are in use, though I think the "c" form is more prevalent

Piiop, I disqualified "reneger" because it sounds too much like another, really inflammatory slur.

Reneging on a bet doesn't happen very often, but when it does it would be nice to have a word for it that doesn't insult an unrelated group of people. It's interesting that welcher/welsher seems to be the only word with this unique connotation.

Other than sounding similar, renege doesn't have anything to do with "black people".

I know that, and I think it's a fine word, but I would hesitate to use it in certain contexts because of the risk of a really bad misunderstanding.

I'm unsure which country you are from, but a US Senator had to resign over using this word in a 100% acceptable context.

Perhaps the welsher was merely being niggardly.

I prefer 'chiseler'.

On behalf of Chisler Inc., I would like to formally protest the use of the word "Chisler" as a synonym for "cheat". Our CEO, Thomas "The Hammer" Chisler, former VP of "Emerging Markets" at Enron, has a sterling reputation as an honest, ethical...

Oh, who are we kidding. We went long on "indian giver" futures this quarter.
