He is getting payed about 1/3 of what the NFL is paying its 840 employees [/ QUOTE ] what is Goodell getting? [ QUOTE ] more then all 56 NHL employees combined! [/ QUOTE ] not a shocker. this seems like a lot, and it is. However, when compared to CEO's of other billion dollar businesses, it's not unnecessarily outlandish. |

[/ QUOTE ] How has HE made them money though? It might just be that I don't fully understand the commissioner's role... but as far as I can tell he doesn't seem to be very good at it. Also, kb4z, can you really compare the baseball commissioner to a CEO? Technically aren't all the teams separate organizations? |

[/ QUOTE ] sure, there are differences. but it's certainly a full time job,and people who are qualified enough to get 32 billionares on the same page don't come cheap. on top of this there are plenty of MLB wide decisions that need to be made - TV contracts, and partnernsips for example, and revenue sharing, expansion plans, etc. basically my point is that people qualified enough to do all this aren't going to cost $500k a year. $14m is a lot, sure, but I would guessed at least a few million. |

How many teams have gotten free stadiums during his tenure? Sure its not all to his credit, but he is running the overall organization.
Interleague play is overrated from an attendance standpoint, but the wildcard has kept more teams and fans interested longer in the season. MLBAM is a huge success. |

Re: \"Selig earned $14.5 million in fiscal \'05\"
I think Tagliabue made less then 12mil in his highest paid year and under his "reign" (similar time period to Selig being MLB commish) the NFL exploded and has far surpassed MLB as the biggest professional sports league.
The NFL's revenue in 2005-2006 was ~$5.6 billion. The MLB's revenue in 2005 was ~$4.4 billion. The NBA's revenue in 2005-2006 was ~$3.75 billion. I've always thought Tagliabue was a really good commissioner and that Selig was a really bad one. The NFL makes way more money then MLB but Selig is payed significantly more then Tagliabue was. Anyway, I'm guess I should just be glad Selig is going to be gone soon (supposedly retiring in 2009). |

[/ QUOTE ] I don't see how that can be good in the long run. You guys make it sound like what he is doing is squeezing every cent of revenue out the league currently at the expense of the long term popularity of the sport? How can the owners be happy with that? Is it because most of them will be dead 20 years from now? |

[/ QUOTE ] according to this Selig making $14.5 is well within what you would expect. the CEO of Walmart makes little compared to other Fortune 50 companies....CEO pay isn't always linear with revenue. |
