For hard rock/metal it's much better to have a humbucker back there. [/ QUOTE ] Mine has a humbucker, but it's pretty weak. I thought I could just buy better pickups at some point. Thanks for all the advice Dilznoofus, plus I'll check out the JCM800 50W head. |

Re: 2+2\'s Lead Guitar Players, Help Please.
I like the Big Muff distortion pedal. It's my favorite. I also have a Boss Distortion DS-1, but I don't use it much.
The 50W head + 4 speaker cabinet's gonna be a lot of noise for a small area. The tube sound will be great though, and Marshall tube amps will give you good distortion. Buy a tube screamer pedal and change your pickups. I'd disconnect all the speakers except one. That's all you really need. That way, you're not overpowering yourself/roommates/neighbors and can still enjoy a good sound. 4 speakers will be overkill in a home. Or, take it outside and run all 4. I agree with the negative reviews of the DOD distortions. I have a DOD Icebox Chorus pedal that I like a lot. |

Re: 2+2\'s Lead Guitar Players, Help Please.
you can probably get one of the older flextone 2 line 6's for like 150-250. i got one not long ago thrown in with a guitar i bought. i don't think they're great amps but they're more powerful (mines 2x12, 50w each side i think) and probably good for your type of thing. the guy i got it from was kinda an 80s metal head.

Re: 2+2\'s Lead Guitar Players, Help Please.
I assumed it was a standard strat with the 3-single-coil combo. I wouldn't mess with it much if you've already got the humbucker. Spending money on nice pickups will end up being a waste of money unless you also seriously upgrade your amp.
I wish I could remember some other good tube amp models but I've forgotten most of what I once knew about guitar amps. You'll end up doing well going that route if you want a truly quality setup, but if you just want something that sounds good playing in your room you'll be wasting a lot of dough. Line 6 seems like a good choice. I played briefly though one once and for a digital emulator it sounds pretty sweet. Digital and solid state amps don't hold up very well at stage volumes IMO, but since you don't have to worry about that you should probably go that route. Good luck. |

Re: 2+2\'s Lead Guitar Players, Help Please.
Line 6? yuck. I'd get a Marshall Guv'nor pedal or a Big Muff; there are some more expensive dist. pedals with tubes, too

I assumed it was a standard strat with the 3-single-coil combo. [/ QUOTE ] It came with the humbucker, stock. You have the choice now of either the traditional 3-single coils, or 2-singles with a humbucker. I'd get a Marshall Guv'nor pedal or a Big Muff [/ QUOTE ] I've read a few reviews on the Big Muff in the last 20 minutes, keeps being described as 1970's Fuzz. I'll have to go listen to one, but I'm not looking for an acid rock tone though, if that's what it sounds like. If I had a choice of having the tone of one of the 5 guitarists I mentioned, I think I'd pick Eric Johnson's. Here's his setup, looks very expensive: |
