Re: SEMI OT: Convincing my dad
[ QUOTE ]
If Kibby was your dad it would be easy!! Your dad may say "ok" but don't come crying to me for $$$ if you want to go out with your buddies ... you must honestly be alright with that [/ QUOTE ] If Kibby was your dad, he'd be coaching you, pushing you to higher levels (assuming he's there already) and helping fend mom off of you. |

Re: SEMI OT: Convincing my dad
great responses guys, thanks a lot
I had definitely considered doing what kibby said going to him and saying "hey, give me a week or so, and if i dont make at least $15 an hour or so, then I will get a real job". Hopefully he lets this go, and I think I will try to flood him with the stats and math on this, just so he gets an idea that poker is beatable, isn't like bingo. and yes. if kibby was my dad, this would be easier |

Re: SEMI OT: Convincing my dad
Good luck, but it isn't going to be easy. I make a lot more money than you and my parents want me to get a real job.

Re: SEMI OT: Convincing my dad
When it comes to convincing your parents, it comes down to more than just the raw numbers.
My parents don't give me much of a hard time, but I know what they are thinking. I have a degree in mechanical engineering and a signficant amount of time invested into a master's degree. I'm sure their concerns (and mine as well), are more about the future and not so much the present numbers. I'm making like $150/hr now, more than I could make as an entry level engineer. However, that isn't the be all and end all of the agrument. With your parents, you are going to have to justify poker playing in some other way. Sure, you'll probably be able to have a better $/hr playing $6.50s than an average summer job. But, it is a situation that doesn't set you up for anything in the future (in their minds). So, you are going to have to discuss about the finer points of poker. The transferable skills that it gives you. There is a long list of these intangables: -analytical thinking -self critical anlysis -stress management -intellectual stimulation -blah blah blah Basically what I am saying is that poker has been a new challenge for me. It has challenged me far more than simulating argon plasmas and determining heat transfer coefficients in supersonic 20000K flows. I'm rambling, but in essence, poker exercises your mind as well as anything you can do. You just have to translate this into words your dad will understand. |

Re: SEMI OT: Convincing my dad
If "real job" means any income-producing employment simply for the sake of having a job, then yes it's a waste of time. Why flip burgers at McDonalds for $7.00 an hour when you can make much more than that at home (though it's tough to turn down all the free big macs you can eat . . . )
If by "real job" he means (1) some type of job that teaches you real skills that will serve you later in life or to get some experience to help with getting a job later; or (2) a traditional fun summer job (camp counselor, lifeguard, etc.) with some income but substantial social interaction, then he's absolutely right. |
