This is probably best, but there are a lot of people out there (my roommate being one) for whom grad school is awesome except for the class part. Meaning they really like doing research. But, yeah, dropping out of a math Ph.D. program is rarely going to be a bad idea.

gild nailed it. going to grad school means that you've decided to devote the period of time to study of the subject. if you can't even make it to the few hours of class a week, let alone the hours of study/research time, you clearly don't want to be there. it's not like daut needs to scam the stipend money to get by.

on a serious note this is 100% true

if you [censored] up in undergrad you waste your money or your parent's money

if you [censored] up in grad school you waste your prof's and the school's money, as i assume that you have at least some part of tuition paid for and are gettting a stipend

also, you are torturing yourself for no good reason.... there's 0 necessity for grad school if you don't have a burning yearning

Even in that case it's not necessarily a good idea.

As I mentioned above, though, for some the class itself is a distraction from stuff they'd rather be thinking about. My roommate can get really obsessed about problems he sets up for himself - which makes him really well suited for research - but sucked it up hard in class the first year because he couldn't take it seriously, and he still has to take one more required class because he's dropped it since it distracted him from [censored] he actually cares about.

So, if OP really loves doing research on his own problems, then it's not inconceivable that grad school is a decent place for him. I concede this is less likely than the alternative.
