I really hate having to tip people for live tournaments. I'm very lucky in that I didn't have to in Australia since it's actually illegal there, because I don't know if I could part with around $30k just because 'it's nice to.'

To anyone who doesn't play professionally, I'm not going to put down however you spend your money you get from poker. You do it for entertainment and the competitive aspect, and that's cool. Just don't start buying friendship, which other people in this thread seem to think you're doing, apparently.

However, if you play for a living it's completely stupid to blow money when you don't have to. If you have friends who support you, that's great. Buy them dinner afterwards or fly them out to a big final table. But don't give them percentage of your profits for free.

First of all I think NYWALKER needs a [censored] blog. He also fails to mention that he has a very good paying job away from poker, therefore all poker income is a bonus. And fortunatly fir him he has been on the positive side of variance as of late. So he likes to rewards his friends with this exrtra money. Nothing noble or amazing about this. End of story.

I like this thread but I try to take it another direction. I try to donate 10% of my monthly winnings to a charity group, personal acquaintance in need (not poker need) or random good will gesture. I started doing this because I felt like I was not really contributing to society by playing poker. I have to say , that the more i donate, the better I run and feel.

I give 5-10% in rake, and once gave a friend 1% for telling me how to play the tourney(his hourly rate was still 4 figures).

I hope that was me...if not, where's my money for making you suck slightly less than you used to?

NY, I've never tipped after winning money in a tournament except for the SNG satellites at the WSOP. Every other tournament I've cashed they've taken a % from the prize pool for dealers. That seems like enough to me.

I think giving your friends cash for sweating is awkward.

Take them out to a nice dinner and then buy all their drinks at the bar.

I have no idea what this means, but it reminds me that you still owe me that $100 for embarrassing you at wii golf.
