What do you mean by this? Obviously she does good with it. She gets the pimp spot tonight.

Anyone else think that perhaps they're having a harder time getting song rights for the show these days? I would imagine the show is such a cash cow that artists aren't as willing to give up a song - which will be turned into a ring tone by the end of the show - without getting serious cash in return.

Because yeah, I sort of wonder about these songs tonight as well. It's such a wide category though, hard to know what they were able to choose from.

[/ QUOTE ]

Aren't the royalty rates for song covers set by statute? I'm having difficulty understanding how an artist can legally refuse to have his or her song sung on the show.
Normally, if you cover an artist's song, you have to pay him a statutory rate, but you don't need prior approval.

[/ QUOTE ]

That's true of recorded covers, but not of live performances. There are a whole slew of rights involved in something like American Idol which is performed live, recorded, repackaged, resold, etc. However, the show has negotiated big deals with most of the major rights-holders, so they don't have to go negotiate with the artist every time.

Good for her that she has the pimp spot, and if she picked the right song she could prob put the competition away. But this is a terrible, boring song. I'm sure she'll sing it well, but what a squandered opportunity.

Phil could be in trouble here. He is stuck in-between LaKisha and Jordin which means unless he makes it a "wow" performance, it will be instantly forgotten.

Apparently they are having problems getting the mohawk to stick. He has long hair. He may not have the mohawk tonight. (I hope he does)

Is this the song from "Oliver"? I hardly picture that as a British Invasion song, and that could hurt her with some Idol watchers.

On the other hand, she will probably turn in a staggeringly good performance - who cares what the theme is?

"Gina - Paint It Black"

Could be her chance to shine

[/ QUOTE ]

I was thinking the same thing. This seems like a good fit for her and she gets a spot towards the end right after terrible Sanjaya.

I don't know. I feel some "lower register" comments coming her way for this song.

Seriously? No way -- I mean I love that song, but it's a terrible choice. It's way too easy to sing; shows off very little vocal range. All it is is a rock song and if she tries to posture like Mick Jagger it will be embarrassing. Horrible mistake, and I was just starting to like Gina (really enjoyed her "Love Child" last week).

Listen to Shirley Bassey's version (which is how it fits in with British Invasion)... I mean it's slightly more uptempo and "modern" sounding...

Don't think it's a terrible choice, kind of slow but a chance for Melinda to really show off her vocals. Think she'll be fine.
