Re: Creative ways to handle panhandlers
Tell them you send your money to sub-saharan Africa, where the kids who are orphaned by civil war collect firewood all day to earn the 6 cents they need to buy some root vegetable that will feed them, so they have enough energy to do it all again the next day. And there is no social assistance, and it's no use panhandling, because everyone else is [censored] poor too.

Re: Creative ways to handle panhandlers
[ QUOTE ]
One response to the 'spare change' question that has never failed for me is "I was just about to ask you the same thing" [/ QUOTE ] Haha. On Saturday I was kinda jarred when I was approached outside a Circle K in a nice part of Phoenix. Not only the location, but the guy - white guy, probably mid-late 20s, dressed nicely, except it looked like he got his ass kicked or something because I could see cuts or sores on his face, even from 20 feet. He asked me "do you have a dollar" in a whiny yuppie-ish sort of way that also threw me off. I was guessing the guy had a meth habit that got out of control on him. All I could think to do was extend two fingers and forecefully say "NO", before proceeding to buy $20 of food and booze that I clearly could do without. |

Re: Creative ways to handle panhandlers
"Sorry, I have none" is usually what I say, and almost always the truth. Cash is for suckers.

Re: Creative ways to handle panhandlers
I will sometimes offer to buy them food. Usually, they get upset because they really want money to buy booze or drugs. However, if they accept I will get them a burger or fries.

Re: Creative ways to handle panhandlers
I've offered to flip them for whatever they have on them. When I first came up with the idea, I thought I'd get lots of takers. So far, none. It does leave a distinct impression on them though, so they aren't as likely to ask me for change the next time they see me.
I've also given them slot tokens before, which I find hilarious because the casino is about 100 miles away. |
