if you go to a participating college, CTRAX is free. It allows you to download DRM protected music, which can be played on your computer or be transferred to 3 others. If you want to put it on a mobile player like an ipod, they charge a little more.

im pretty satisfied with ctrax

For live music I go to archive.org. It's free and the quality is usually pretty good. Can get a lot of older stuff too. Really depends on your music taste though.
