My friend worked for a Ford dealership for a couple months. He said most of his coworkers were having affairs, divorced or generally [censored].
There's a great article on edmunds where they sent an undercover reporter to write about what goes on when becoming a car salesman. |

I worked sales for BMW for one of the highest allocations in the country. Its hard work. Running around in a nice suit trying to find cars and keys, dealing with dicks in the finance and sales department (not to mention management), unruly customers who are convinced they are getting [censored] over. Long hours, weekends, never two days off in a row, if someone had papers that needed to be signed and you took a day off, you then lost 1/2 the deal.
All in all I wasn't ready to take the job and still was offered a management position in two of the biggest locations in the country. If anything I walk away from it with good memories because it taught me alot about negotiating, complacency, tenacity. and oh HOW TO BUY A CAR AND NOT GET RIPPED. firstyearclay,
Correct me if I'm wrong... But the pay is in line with the hours you work.. ~25-30 an hour for competent sales people? And sales managers can start seeing >250k a year? |

A few years back I was out of work for a while and couldn't get good enough work in my industry so I debated trying car sales. I ended up not doing it, because everything you hear about car salesmen is that they are sleazeballs, etc. Bad work environment...etc, grueling hours..blah blah.
Not for me. A lot of this is also from what I gathered through car-buying experiences. If you are smart, I'd say do something better, even if it means less $$$. |
