Default Re: PL, how to calculate \"pot\" raises?

Thanks for the replies guys. I was right in my understanding then.

I will be playing PLHE this weekend live for the first time, and want to make sure I know how it is done.

Follow up questions...

What areas tend to be "troublesome" in live PL games? I would imagine that the sizing of bets can be problematic. Are there any specific situations that tend to cause problems or situations I should pay extra close attention to protect myself?

Also I assume that only a full "bet" will reopen action? E.g. I bet $100 on the flop, next player to act bets AI for $175, next player calls $175, when it is my action, I can only call or fold. Correct?

And that quote isn't that enlightening.

Department of Spoonfeeding was on break so I couldn't find someone to go through all the posts on the thread to ferret out the best parts. The Department sends its regrets.

In cash games (as opposed to tournaments) one traditionally treats the SB as completed when calculating the pot size. So the Max raise in this case would be to $120.

[/ QUOTE ]

This is the correct answer. Short hand instead of thinking of the small blind as "completed" a preflop raise can be 4x the blind +1x for each limper. In the OP there were two limpers so the raise is 6X the blind to $120. If it is a three blind game it is still 4x the blind plus one blind for each limper.

It depends on where you are playing. If you are playing with inexperienced players it will be very slow going. Like no limit many people working in casinos are unfamiliar with pot limit. One trouble area is heads up betting. Traditonallly heads up you can bet more than the pot and it will only be trimmed back if the other player asks it to be. Bob C. is opposed to this in his rules (he feels it is unfair that a player be forced to give the info that he woudl prefer to trim back the bet).

Ok. When I had originally read that thread they hadn't gotten to that part. And that quote isn't that enlightening.

[/ QUOTE ]
I also thought that post, while accurate, was too formulaic and didn't just spell it out. Which is why I added to the thread with:

[ QUOTE ]
When you raise the size of the pot, first you put in the call, then tally up what's in the pot including your call, and add that much more.

[/ QUOTE ]
But the tidbits being added now about counting the SB as a full blind are good. I was myself a little confused by this last summer since I'd always seen that done, but when I looked at the WSOP PL rules they were not doing this. Apparently a difference between tourney rules and cash game rules? Why do we need a different rule for tourney PL vs cash PL?

Why do we need a different rule for...<fill in the blank>?

[/ QUOTE ]

Quick pointless story: When I worked at Hollywood Park ten years ago I remember three different methods for awarding odd chips in limit Omaha/8 for three different size games going on at once during the same time and day.

Method one (for 6/12 kill): By suits, break down $2 chips to $1 chips.

Method two (for 3/6 and 4/8 kill): By suits, don't break down beyond $1 chips (even though 50 cent chips would be left after drop).

Method three (for 20/40 or 30/60 game): Clockwise from button, don't break down $5 chips.

They are played by different people who interpret the rule differently. Also cash players have found it much easier to raise 4x the blind rather the 3.5x the blind. Also in tournaments as you are getting short stacked the blinds become more important while the blinds just aren't very important in a cash game.

I've only played pot-limit once and have a basic question:

Does the dealer stack the chips into uniform numbers of chips as they come in so the players know what's in the pot at any given time or do you have to add it all up in your head? I'm supposing that the chips get stacked but I'm not sure.

No the chips don't get stacked. You should keep track, but you can ask the dealer what the pot size is.
