[ QUOTE ] The only Casino(s) in NY are in NY state. Turning Stone is near Syracuse. [/ QUOTE ] This coulnd't be any further from the truth. There are exactly half a dozen B&M casinos in NY all with poker, last time I knew. http://casinocity.com/us/ny/cities.html [/ QUOTE ] Wow. I never heard of most of those places. I knew that former Governor Patacki was trying to open 5 casinos in the Hudson valley region but was blocked by a change in the way states can form a compact with Indian nations. They've all been around at least a couple of years. AFAIK the Akwasasne is just one poker room (it has two listings), and is in EXTREME Northern NYS. The Seneca ones are a bit closer to population centers -- Niagara is near Buffalo, Salamanca is on the I-86 Southern Tier Corridor, I forget where Irving is.
http://poker.wikia.com/wiki/Casinos:Eastern_US#New_York I wrote up Niagara pretty thoroughly when I went there last year. |

Akwasasne is pretty much in Canada, same with Seneca - not exactly driving distance from NYC (and I have played at Akwasasne, trust me, not worth any drive) - AF

there are indeed small, functioning indian casinos with poker rooms scattered in upstate new york. these are not related to the VLT "racinos" which are run by the state lottery, that do not have any table games. but none of them would justify a day trip from someone visiting NYC.
gov. spitzer just approved the monticello project which could potentially open in 18-24 months. |

[/ QUOTE ] My last understanding was that Patacki approved that project (at a legendary borscht belt hotel that had been bought by the Senica tribe) but Congress made a new law which prohibits casino tribes from entering into compacts with states for new casinos unless the land was proven to e their native sovern territory. Until that law states were routinely cutting deals with tribes to place casinos in areas that benefited the state, allowing the tribe to annex land within their compact deal. Can you provide a link showing that the deal is moving forward so I can learn more? TT [img]/images/graemlins/club.gif[/img] |

http://www.nytimes.com/2007/02/20/ny...mp;oref=slogin http://www.nypost.com/seven/02202007/new...neth_lovett.htm should be all over the NYC media and papers this morning. obviously the deal is not completely in the bag yet, but this is the most promising development in at least a year. considering spitzer's stance with online gambling, I personally did not expect him to embrace B&M in the way that his predecessor did. |

[/ QUOTE ] Its all pomp, no delivery. "The casino still needs federal approval, but Spitzer vowed to lead those efforts so construction can begin as soon as possible." - its exactly the same situation that Patacki was in, and the feds won't approve it. I dont think Patacki greenlighted this project but it was discussed, he did however greenlight the project at the hotel which I previously discussed and thats not going anywhere fast. the NY Times link I added breaks it down a little bit better. it wasn't my intention to provoke unjustified hope for this project, just thought it would be an interesting addendum to the thread.
