Am I the only one not that impressed with Cal Ripkin's record? [/ QUOTE ] He broke a record that existed for nearly 60 years. Nobody prior to him had reached 60% of Gehrig's total. He not only broke the record, but tacked on 500+ games to the total. What exactly would impress you? |

I don't remember anyone fawning over AC Green. Insert AC Green virginity jokes here: |

From track and field, Mike Conley's world record in the long jump was very impressive, as was Michael Johnson's 19.32 in the 200. [/ QUOTE ] Mike Powell. |

is the breaking of marris' record a non-achievement now? [/ QUOTE ] with the whole steroid issue and the fact that 3 different people have broken Maris' record I don't think it is worthy of 'most impressive'. It was a really cool thing when it happened but I think there were enough close-ish calls before it that everyone pretty much knew it was going to fall sooner or later. The Gehrig record was supposed to be pretty unbreakable. |

[/ QUOTE ] Conley's record was in the indoor triple jump. (still has the US record). And not that impressed with Powell's mark. Much better than his other jumps, but barely beat the old record (by 0.05m) and Carl Lewis had been closing on Beamon's record already. |

[/ QUOTE ] The record was one of the longest standing records in track and field. Beamon set it at high altitude in Mexico City and with a tail wind that was at the max allowed for it to count as a WR. You say that Carl Lewis was approaching the WR, but he never surpassed Beamon. His personal best was the same day as Powell's WR jump. In an era when track and field record fall constantly, Powell's long jump is yet to be beaten . |
