Re: Cancer has been defeated (and cheaply, to boot!)
Glycolysis, if I'm not mistaken, is breaking down glucose as an energy source. I wonder what sort of effect taking this drug will have on a normal person's metabolism. I can't imagine you'll feel very peppy in the morning besides the fact that YOUR CANCER IS POOF.
I'm getting the "too good to be true" vibe. |

Re: Cancer has been defeated (and cheaply, to boot!)
if this were even real (i'm still unsure...?) it is going to take more than a few years to get through the clinical trial process for approval.
and most drugs don't make it through that process for some safety reason or another, so if they were to use this compound, they'd likely have to go through several different attempts to get it right. |

Re: Cancer has been defeated (and cheaply, to boot!)
I wonder if it's easier/quicker for a drug to receive FDA approval if it's a preexisting drug being used in a novel way to treat a different ailment. Only thing that comes to mind is Proscar/prostate -> Propecia/baldness.

[/ QUOTE ] I'm just skimming through the original article now, but at first glance it looks like DCA changes the metabolism of cancer cells from conducting cytoplasmic-based glycolysis to mitochondrial glucose oxidation. The overall effect seems to be that re-activating mitochondrial glucose metabolism seems to reactive apoptotic (think cell suicide) pathways that are normally dormant in cancer cells. Meaning the side effects may not be that harsh. This drug is safe for human use, it's been given for years for other conditions, it's just never been indicated as an anti-cancer agent. |

Hmm, yesterday i was being a cynic and ranting to my dad about how they'll never 'cure' cancer.
