better yet, sign up for a host with fantastico. Fantastico will create the MySQL database and install phpbb for you without any sort of difficulties. This is definitely the way to go for a noob.

I can't attest to these problems but others have complained of difficulties after setting up their CMS using Fantastico. I'd suggest doing some research before using that in order to save yourself from headaches in the future.

I already have a hosting service because of other sites. The problem I'm seeing is that my SQL database is only 100mb. What size should that be in order for a good sized forum to work?

Many hosts offer mysql db's whose disk usage counts towards the plan you buy instead of being capped at some arbitrary limit set at the webhost's discretion. I believe dreamhost is one of those, read up on their tos.

You first have to create some traffic, before worrying about the DB size limitation.

But, the bottom line there is, should your DB needs grow larger than your limit, you'll either switch hosts, pay extra for the larger size, move to a dedicated server, etc...

How hard is it to just use an old computer with a few upgrades for my dedicated server? I think I'll get traffic pretty quick once I get it done (bored high schoolers). Also if anyone has any experience with the best mods for these forums I'm all ears. I saw one above and I'm curious as to why you picked these over the others. Thanks agian!

Not exactly easy, and it won't be worth it price or performance wise.

It just won't work..
