[ QUOTE ] This thread really should be linked in the FAQ. [/ QUOTE ] [/ QUOTE ] I didn't get any PMs; nobody hit the lil' "Notify Mod" button. I'm glad you're brainstorming on how to improve the FAQ, but maybe you should let me know so I can improve the FAQ. (Besides hiding the suggestion at the bottom of an anti-Dell thread. Re: MY NEW COMPUTER SUCKS

I did this after I got my Dell desktop. Got rid of all the factory installed BS. Worked like a peach. [/ QUOTE ] Same. The factory install lasted all of 4 minutes once I got the box open. I wouldn't get too freaked about so many processes. It's just the ability to spot the bad ones that you need to worry about. Windows XP seems to have a different way of listing things than older Windoze os's. Where as Ctrl+alt+del would only show a few items back in the 98 days, ctrl+shift+esc shows many more processes, reasonably so, than it's older counter part. But I don't want to get into explaining all that here and now. |

Re: MY NEW COMPUTER SUCKS
what are you system specs? Did you get some cheap ass POS AMD processor?
Get a firwall and turn Norton off. Just use it to scan suspicious stuff and do scans from time to time. It is probably scanning your PT database and HH files evertime your try to import them. At least see if you can set it so it leaves those files alone. There is no reason to scan files on access unless it is the first time you have opened it up. you can run MSCONFIG.EXE and turn off all the [censored] that starts automatically too. |

Re: MY NEW COMPUTER SUCKS
i did the de-crap-ifer. Uninstalled some stuff. Since I actually USE norton for anti-virus and firewall I didn't think I should uninstall of all that, unless there are good, free programs I can get to take its place. I downloaded AVG per someone's request- is the free version of that going to be enough? Does that come with a firewall or should I just use microsoft firewall (assume this is 'lol' worthy).
Also, here is the hijackthis logfile. I ran it through the website and didn't understand most everything it told me. Is free Zone Alarm + free AVG anti-virus enough to keep me safe? If I have that can I get rid of silly Norton?

Re: MY NEW COMPUTER SUCKS
I say you do this....
You backup your PA hud layout, PT databases, Player notes form all your sites onto a CD + all else you wanna keep. you get the CDs it shipped with, do a format... Now IVE NEVER OWNED OR FORMATTED A DELL PC... but i assume it will ask if you want to install all the crap that comes with it(Like mcaffee and junk). Say no to all that crap, you just want the operating system. Once done, download ZA security suite - Ive read tonnes of reviews, they recommend a few and ZA is pretty decent and has advanced things(Checking for hooks etc). Install that, update all your crap(See for latest XP patches, check for asound/motherboard drivers etc). Once done PA/PT/Whatever else all installed and your done |

pc (dell) de-crapifier [/ QUOTE ] That's awesome. I'm not a big fan of ZA. There are other free firewalls out there that I like much better. I use Kerio, but it might just be personal preference. |
