[/ QUOTE ] Unless you know headphones, there's nothing visual that really distinguishes expensive ones from cheap ones. Same thing goes with normal earbuds, but white earbuds scream iPod. Otherwise with normal headphones/earbuds you could be listening to a $30 CD player for all they know.

Yeah, and I don't get how I see people listening to iPod earbuds on the subway. You'd have to crank them all the way up. And besides being able to join in the "you can't allow me to make myself damage my hearing by listening to a product that allows me to damage my hearing" lawsuit, you'd be listening to pretty much nothing but treble.
Get some nice big noise canceling headphones. That is, if you don't mind not hearing people whispering "oh drat...and I thought he was listening to an iPod" behind your back.

I also think I have pretty average shaped ear canals, and it took me about 2 days of walking around and 3 seconds of jogging with my ipod to figure out that I gave a [censored] about using the earbuds.

[/ QUOTE ] High quality audio is terribly under appreciated. Apart from anything else, in the environments that many people listen to an ipod (or other MP3 player), the background noises of trains, buses, trams, cars, etc., degrades the sound quality that for many people it's not worth it. It's like the tools who put high quality sound equipment into their hotted up cars - the engine noise destroys the sound.

[/ QUOTE ] no, not nearly as much. most muggers don't know a $300 pair of headphones from a $30 pair. all muggers, however, understand that iPod earbuds = $300 iPod. this is an issue for young people in Brooklyn, to the extent that the police department has warned people against wearing the earbuds.

[/ QUOTE ] , they're asking to get mugged , if they're trying to look stylish they're failing since everyone and their grandmother has an ipod at this point , the sound quality sucks , they are worse for your hearing than regular headphones
