I agree with the poster who said it makes a difference whether it's loose-passive or loose-aggressive.

If it's loose-aggressive, if you're not comfortable with difficult decisions after the flop, such as having TP with an ok kicker faced with someone who's betting aggressively or raising, then tightening up your starting requirements will allow you to play back at your opponents with more confidence (I think). Additionally, in a loose-aggressive game, the price per playing a hand will be more expensive, especially if it's a draw. Maybe "tightening up" means playing fewer hands out of position, or having a better hand selection when out of positon.

Why play loose in a tight game? Well, really you're playing loose against tight opponents. Again, I'd probably qualify it by saying you're really going to be aggressive against tight opponents by stealing blinds and antes, or stealing pots from limpers if you suspect weakness (and think that, because it's a tight table, players are mostly playing their hands straightforwardly preflop).

The phrase is just a generalization, and like any generalization, it has some value when applied broadly, but loses some value when applied to particular situations.

LP = loosen up
LAG = tighten up
TP = LAG it up
TAG = run like a little girl

Read "Theory of Poker". It covers this concept.

"Play tight in loose games and loose in tight games" is an oversimplification. You can bluff, semi-bluff and steal blinds more in tight games. Also, if only two or three people see the flop, hand like AK no pair and middle pair-good kicker have a better chance of winning than if 5 or 6 see the flop. However, somebody who calls or plays back is more likely to have a good hand than in a loose game. Also, your preflop play (especilly in EP) should probably be tighter, and you will be getting poorer odds for speculative hands and draws.
