Some landlords in California are saying this. I am guessing that despite all the claims of not being liable etc that a court somehwere has found the landlord to be liable after a fire or some sort of loss to the property.

renters insurance is cheap because you do not ram your apartment into other apartments or park it in oakland.

Even if he has his own policy on the building, he still would want you to have renter's.
