Brag currently no poker "professional" that im aware of pays tax in australia, b/c if they did everyone would rush in to claim there loses etc.

Beat: He still has to pay Tax to the US Government b/c Australia doesn't have one of those tax deals like Canada etc

Brag: When your Pokerstars fame boys robousto you dont need to worry about tax. I heard that Raymer doesnt even write off taxis and Moneymaker doesnt need to fill in a tax form.

since we've morphed this thread to a tax discussion.. i've heard a million different things about who pays taxes and who doesn't... seriously... what country(s) in this world is a professional poker player not required to pay income taxes??

i heard you actually do have to pay as a professional in Canada, Australia,.. how about the UK??.. i've heard some people say you do.. others say you don't...

i'm debating on moving out of the US.. this would likely weigh on my decision..

You technically have to pay in AU if you are officially recognised as a professional poker player.

However, you really have to go out of your way volunteering documents etc etc to prove that you make a living out of it, and even then they are reluctant/hesitant to classify you as such. It also has to have been your primary source of income for at least 3 years, and you will never be prompted for the information.

So essentially you don't really have to pay tax on it in AU, accountants advise "say nothing and youll be fine"

At least in Finland you don't have to pay taxes for gambling wins, as long as the winnings are won within the European Economic Area. If the winnings are won outside EEA you will have to pay income tax. For example Party (Gibraltar) is "taxfree" but PokerStars and FTP are both taxable afaik.
