Re: How did Rounders affect THEFAP sales?
[ QUOTE ]
I just can't get past TeddyKGB carrying Oreos in a chip rack. Take a look at that again. The Oreos are too big. They don't fit in a chip rack. So why would anyone do that except in a stupid movie? [/ QUOTE ] I think people do wierder things in real life than they do in movies, not the other way around Some of my friends and I started playing poker in casinos shortly after rounders came out, but I don't think there was a big causal connection. We all saw the movie in the theater, and loved it. But at the time, I thought the movie made poker seem like a very difficult game, that you needed some strong psychological skills that were out of reach for a regular (non-genious) person like myself. What turned me on to 2+2 was that one of my friends had TOP, and the title itself got me thinking about how there probably were intellectual things to learn about poker, so I borrowed the book (for like 6 years - the bastard recently made me give it back!). |

It also presents poker as a skill game and portrays the hero as someone with integrity and worthy of respect trying to make it in a very tough and complex world. This is certainly the kind of thing that would cause people to gain some interest in the game. [/ QUOTE ] I agree. Mike (Matt Damon)is a flawed but highly sympathetic character. Joey Knish (John Turturro)is also a great character. In my opinion, he's the epitome of what a professional poker player should be. He knows how to keep his ego in check and doesn't do anything stupid like taking his entire bankroll to one table. I believe Chris Ferguson said something similar on the DVD commentary. |
