Not many concentration camps were still operating in 1956 either, but neither claim is all that far off. Things were still pretty bad in the '40s and '50s or else there wouldn't have existed a huge civil rights movement.

Actually, I'm wondering if things have gotten better in America as far as race relations between black & white, since typical Americans likely band together and see every brown person who can't speak Spanish as a potential walking bomb.
