Well, it should improve the situation at Foxwoods. For example, almost immediately upon Mohegan's room's closing, the Woods stopped giving the $10 Wampum Points reward for registration in the Saturday $65 tournament. Clearly, they knew they no longer had competition, and weren't afraid to act upon that information. I'm curious to see what they do once their competition comes back.

With 45 tables that place will be packed with waitlists for 2-3 hours or more. Hopefully they will expand.

You have to love Mohegan Sun's timing. Their closing of the poker room coincided perfectly with the start of the poker boom, and now they announce a new room as the boom is ending.

Still, great news!

When it gets competition, will poker at Foxwoods improve? Do you think they'll ever get those automatic sign-up screens working? Is this going to be a better situation for those of us in the Northeast who have had Foxwoods as our only option for God knows how long?

I'm hopeful.

I wouldn't get too hopeful. FW was the same as now back when it had competition with MS. The big difference in the two rooms back then were dealers. The dealers a MS were superior because they didn't pool their tips. So if you were a bad dealer that didn't get many hands out, you basically starved, so they had a real incentive to be good.

You can compare whatever you like (though you just issued an opinion of mediocre without saying in comparison to what). But comparing it to, say, the entire worldwide stock of cardrooms to judge its mediocrity might not give it a rating that's meaningful to players who are "local" to it. Looking at it from Vegas or L.A., 45 tables might be "Meh, so what?" news; from NYC or Boston, it looks a bit different.

Well, that's not "just 45 tables." That's increasing the Connecticut total by 45 tables. If there's enough demand to fill 45 more tables than Foxwoods has now, there'll be waiting lists. Otherwise, the load will probably even out across the two.

I don't see how any of this can be a bad thing.

I don't play LHE much so it doesn't really affect me but I wonder if they'll get anything bigger than 20/40 going regularly (as Foxwoods has failed miserably at outside of big tournaments).

This basically means that MS will be the Borgata of New England - it will be interesting to see how FW responds in order to attract the younger crowd.

"Scheduled to open spring 2008"

Of course that means more like fall 2008, which is two years from now, which is a LONG time for them to rethink plans for a poker room. I still won't believe MS is going to have a poker room until I can actually step foot in it.

Seems like 45 tables is better than the 0 tables they have now.
