So it's kind of like in Office Space where they make a program to make millions by stealing pennies at a time...only they are physically stealing pennies at a time.

Pretty sure he can't steal the money if he actually rang you up for the extra charge with mocha. If he did he'd be stealing from Starbucks also, since the register will end up short.

Nobody wants a receipt for their coffee. He was embarrassed that he screwed up and didn't want anyone to know. He was trying to screw you at the end, but it was because he didn't want to get into "trouble". People are flawed, things happen.

Why do you guys think I'm crazy? All I did was ask why it was too much and then asked to see the receipt. I listed a bunch of possibilities. I'm not sure if something was wrong, but were there enough things wrong for me to say something? Does the principle matter?

Guids is 100% correct here. There is no way the guy is trying to steal from you here. He rang up the +mocha, so that extra $.30 is required to be in his till at the end of the night.

The more likely situation is he hit the wrong button and didn't notice it until you mentioned it after he had totaled the sale. I have worked as a cashier in two places and they have both had loop holes to jump through for a cashier to fix any small mistake like this (in order to keep cashiers from coming up with schemes to steal from the company). It would not surprise me if in order to fix a mistake like this it would take 5 minutes and possibly require the attention of his supervisor. He was probably trying to shrug it off so as not to hold up his line over thirty cents.
