Re: Sklansky on Razz
Let's put it this way, if I would be planning to play Razz, I would read the book, not only to learn the game, but also to get a picture of what my opponents know about it. It's similar to chess. To be succesful there you have to know the published theory plus a little extra.

I think he was not giving his own opinion, but quoting the typical bad player who sits at a table without having read books about the game. [/ QUOTE ] Thanks man. |

[ QUOTE ] [ QUOTE ] "Some things you just can't learn in a book" [/ QUOTE ] This is true, but games like lowball draw, seven-card stud hi-lo split with no qualifier, and seven-card razz you can. [/ QUOTE ] I think he was not giving his own opinion, but quoting the typical bad player who sits at a table without having read books about the game. [/ QUOTE ] I didn't mean to imply that he was. I just wanted to point out a fact to those who may be reading the thread. |

Re: Sklansky on Razz
[ QUOTE ]
I always find it confusing when people claim that you will crush a certain game after heaving read a specific book. What if the other guys read it also? I mean who is so stupid to play for a significant amount of money without having read it? Overall I'd say it's the minimum requirement to read this book before you sit down on a Razz table. [/ QUOTE ] Is there really such a thing a "sitting down at a Razz table"? Almost all Razz hands in B&M games are played as part of a mix, except for the lone WSOP event. It is highly likely that most players playing in a mixed game have never read a book on Razz, because "Sklansky on Poker" is basically the only book on Razz, and it is pretty obscure. Reading this book (or even just the Razz chapter of Hellmuth's book) will indeed give you a huge advantage during Razz hands against most mixed game players. |

[/ QUOTE ] If you play Razz at Stars or Full Tilt you will discover 95% of your opponents have never read any material on Razz, let alone David's book. And if you happen to play a table where most everyone plays well (this is rare online even at the ultra-high limits), you will find the opponents much easier to read because you are also taught the counter strategies to optimal play. Re: Sklansky on Razz
If that's the case, why is everyone trying to beat the Hold'em games?

Re: Sklansky on Razz
[ QUOTE ]
If that's the case, why is everyone trying to beat the Hold'em games? [/ QUOTE ] because razz is no longer spread in casinos except in mixed format. See Ray Zee's article on the Stardust in this month's 2+2 magazine to get an idea what it used to be like in the early years. TT [img]/images/graemlins/club.gif[/img] |

If that's the case, why is everyone trying to beat the Hold'em games? [/ QUOTE ] I actually played some Razz at PokerStars last night, but it looked like there was only one game going at each level above 1/2. Even against terrible opponents, it is hard to win a lot of money when you can only play a single table. |

Re: Sklansky on Razz
It was a goldmine when Stars first started it, but the games have dried up considerably since. I think you can find a few tables going on Sundays all day usually. Some people only play on Sundays because the games are so good.
