he killed the other rat because he was a witness to what happened and because he didn't trust any remnant of costello's organization. pure self-preservation. also easier to keep your stories straight when there's only one person talking.

dignam either killed him out of pure revenge on his own, or because the gf tipped him off. i would love it if it was just pure revenge.

why not turn him in to the cops? with that CD they had more than enough evidence to go on. they'd have had him on a bunch of murders...

[/ QUOTE ]

the CD doesn't prove he killed anybody, only that he was in with costello, but he could easily try to explain that away. i mean after all, he killed costello himself. no way to guarantee a charge sticks. besides showing up in his apartment dressed like a spaceman and making a brainmatter milkshake on his carpet is more dignam's style.

It was just vigilante justice.

btw, speaking of funny rats, is it just me or were the rats in Costello's drawing sniffing a big butt?

Unless I missed something, there is absolutely no reason whatsoever to think Dignam was a mole. The rat is just a symbol of Sullivan and the movie in general, similiar to the rats used in Costello's drawing.

[/ QUOTE ]
obviously, but I think it's simpler than that. It's really just Scorsese showing he still has a has a sense of humor.

[/ QUOTE ]

This is probably correct. I read a reviewer who mentioned that the ending was Scorsese's way of 'winking' at the audience.

Walberg was a good guy. After Leo's death, the GF opened the package and contacted Walberg, who went vilgiante.

Atleast that's how I interpreted it.

Marky mark was just there to clean up the mess since the bad guys can't win.

Forget the ending, the best part of the movie was when Nicholson says,

"If things continue like this, some people are gonna get killed. USUALLY, when it comes to me, it's the other guy!"
