Alex is correct.
Unlike all other spots on the depth chart, the 3rd string quarterback must be designated before the game. |

What if all 3 quarterbacks go down? Or say, #1 sprains his wrist, #2 breaks his leg, #3 breaks his arm, and number #1 can still play?
I never knew that there was any rules about substitutions like this like in baseball.... |

Okay, so I'm wrong? A team can go from the starter straight to #3?

That's totally a rule, rofl.
Often you'll see a team use another player (for instance, the Broncos will use Rob Smith) instead of the 3rd string QB, because if they play before the 4th quarter, you can't use the other two). |

LOL at the NFL rules ignorance displayed by people who apparently pay attention.

There have been times when teams with quarterbacks with injuries have had all of their QBs active for a game. This is legal, and means that you can go to any QB at any time and back, but you have to play the game with one fewer player on the bench.
I remember a game about 7 or 8 years ago when the Jets starting QB was injured. Their second string QB had been designated as the emergency QB because their third string QB was also their punter. As a result, their punter had to play QB. Otherwise they would have lost both their injured starting QB AND their punter (who was designated as the second string QB). |

The rule just allows another player to play each week. A team can go the entire season without the third string QB playing. He used to take up a spot on the roster and never played. Now that spot can for a special teams player or backup RG or KO specialist or whatever.
