I didn't really care for the Excalibur. It's nicer than the rooms downtown, but definately not as nice as the Luxor, MGM, or other major hotels. Last time I stayed at the Excalibur was several years ago though, so it may be better now. I can't speak for the Tropicana or Imperial though.

Try the Flamingo's 2/4$ limit games! Nice atmosphere, juice games. I liked it much better than the MGM (although that's more stylish of course).

I stayed at the tropicana my first (and only) time in Vegas. The interior decorating is rather gawdy, but the rooms were just fine. The location was quite good. We got a ridiculously good rate by way of being a freind of a friend of the daughter of a big wig there, so I have no idea what it costs normally, and if it's worth it.

I stayed at Excalibur a while back and it's one of the strange, family-themed (why!?) hotels in Vegas. I wouldn't recommend it, but it is cheap.

I've also stayed at Imperial Palace and it was decent and (like you said) in a great location.

I think this is a great website for shopping around for Vegas-y things: Cheapo Vegas!

I just got back from Vegas this past weekend, actually -- and I'll join the other person who recommended the Venetian poker room. It's pretty good, though at one point I did find myself in a pretty tough 1-2NL game, knowing that I could go ANYWHERE and find more loose-passive players. But then I doubled up through someone who couldn't fold AA and all was well.

I agree that excalibur is fairly rundown looking, however your only a tram ride or a short walk from every major casino. That is the key. Honestly, there is very little difference between the hotel rooms from one hotel to the next, other then the price. Who cares what hotel your sleepin in, you'll be asleep, its your proximity to things while your awake that matters.

Befolder-

I went to Vegas on Oct 4th. I stayed at the MGM so naturally I played there as it was about a 2 minute walk to the poker tables from my room. Their poker room is pretty nice but it seemed to me, just from glancing around, that they may get more players down at the Bellagio and Venetian. It was harder to get a full table of $2/4 past 3 in the morning.

On a side note, if you play at any of the rooms that are part of the MGM/Mirage players club make sure you get a player's club card. Last time I went I got a players club card and they sent me emails and I was able to stay at the MGM for 70 a night.

I echo the statements about it being a good idea to stay down in the Bellagio are of the stip. Although its not super-close, Treasure Island seems to have decent rates.

ahhhhhhhhhhh, hooters is a bad choice. i stayed there last time i went to vegas and it was ridiculous. the novelty wears off kind of right when you open the door and realize, "oh yeah, im sure EVERY OTHER DUDE IN THE WORLD ALSO THOUGHT THIS WOULD BE SWEET." but you kind of get through it. don't eat too many hot wings.

i will have the short hair if you ever see me. im also going to dress up for halloween (which we'll probably do saturday night). im not sure what i'll be yet. i'll post in the NC thread to ask your opinions.

The only good thing I could say about Excalibur is you are right across the street from New York New York and the have the steakhouse called Gallaghers, and inside Gallaghers you will find the best ribeye you will ever sink your teeth into.

We have had good luck at the Flamingo too. Might be a bit more, but the location is right on, like the imperial palace, but i've never stayed there. Avoid Circus Circus, unless you like motel 6 accommodations.
