I'm an extreme n00b at NL, but I took 3BB and added a smidgeon because there was already a caller.

Being an extreme noob, it might be wise to use the 4xbb+1bb per limper guide when PFR'ing with limpers involved.

Since I don't like using 'guides' if I don't know the reasoning behind it (I am reading NLHETAP right now, but haven't seen much pre-flop discussion yet, 1/2 way through)... I like to know the 'why's' first.

Using my limit knowledge, and some general poker study, it's purpose seems to me would be to make it harder for limpers to call the raise since you lower their pot-odds, thus preventing some randomness from beating your premium hand. Taking some suited connectors and such out of the running. Then if you hit TP you're more likely good, and not competing with some draws.
