T8, 58, 69. Even someone this passive probably raises the boat on the river, and I don't think he'd go this crazy on the flop with just a pair of 9s.

Why cap the flop miles? Given his low aggr. factor I was afraid he would go into calldown mode aftter I cap the flop, but that he would bet the turn again if I would just call.

btw the turn cap seems too much.

You're probably right, although at the time I thought that I could have a lot of his possible holdings beat: lower sets, the retarded played AA or KK, perhaps some two pair and I will have 10 outs to improve if he indeed has a better hand.

And to make my point: Villain showed A2o for Ace-high on the river!

I certainly didn't expect it and I knew you wouldn't expect it either. Just a hand that shows why you should never say that villain is never holding hand x here, or why you call in a big pot while you are basically certain that you are beat. There is always a probability that your opponent is retarded.

Sorry, I disagree with your lesson here. There is always this possibility, but that doesn't mean you should necessarily call. If the probability that your opponent has lost his mind in this fashion is less than the odds your getting from the pot it's still a fold even if he shows the nut low.

There is a reason why I'm saying "a big pot", and I'm also not advocating calling with anypair in a 20BB pot because he 'could' have A-high. But I think it is wise to always keep in your mind that your opponent can have something besides the hand he is representing, even when you think you have a reasonable read. The same is true when you are trying to read your opponents hand. Sometimes the solid playing tag did indeed cap a small pocket pair preflop. If you have AA and think he is going wild with KK, it would be an expensive mistake to stick to you read on all streets if he flopped his mirake set (just some example).
