Congress treats our tax dollars as a credit card with no limit.

On a side note......I think the governemnts goal is to find a way to regulate it. I dont think this is long term. I tend not to be as articulate as others, so I will use an analogy. Currently, online gambeling is unregulated or like a faucet opne wide. Governemnt shuts the faucet and then starts to let it trickle under its control taking its cut from each drop. In addition, this is the governments way of showing the rest of the world just how much control it has over their citizens.

Somethign similiar happened during the prohibition period and today with cigarettes.

Unfortunately, daz, you're probably wrong here. The major factors are as follows:

1) Republicans are getting crushed by ethics and scandals, and their power base has shifted from limited-government conservatives like George Will to big-government theocrats like James Dobson.

2) To appease the Dobsonites who are undoubtedly sick of the scandals and expectant of "Christianist" law, they target issues like gambling.

3) They have little to no understanding of how sites like PP work, but they have heard anecdotes of people getting addicted and losing wads of cash.

4) They decide that it will play well politically to their Christian base.

5) On top of that, it was Jack Abramoff who scuttled a similar attempt to stop internet gaming several years ago, and this law allows Republicans to disassociate themselves with Abramoff.

And so here we are. Will they eventually go the other way, allow it and tax it? Maybe. But for now, this is a political issue that Republicans are not going to give up.

Welcome to the theocracy, baby!

Internet= free flow of information

censorship= damage to the free flow of information

What does the internet do about the free flow of information? It routes around it.

For every network that gets shut down, two new ones will be created.

Very true. Look at what happened to the authorities trying to shut down Napster. That worked out really well didn't it.

Um, I think it worked reasonably effectively... am I wrong? I've used iMesh to download for free, but I'm paying for each song now on iTunes.
