It's tough to do this kind of thinking on the fly, but here's my read. You answer one of your own questions.

The reason to bet this turn is because "there are lots of hands that want a free card here." Any diamond or king is a scare card.

Another reason to bet the turn is if villan will only call with hands you are behind, then you can check the river.

If villan c/r, you are quite possibly behind, but if your read is correct, you should call down. In a pot this small, I think folding may also have its merits.
