Re: Derek Jeter -- hitting streak over?
[ QUOTE ]
[ QUOTE ] Just saw it on Sportscenter.. not sure how true this is. They said Torre took him out, and then after told Jeter, "sorry!! forgot about the streak" and Jeter said "That's OK." They were both unaware of the rule. [/ QUOTE ] From the AP story: [ QUOTE ] Yankees manager Joe Torre at first forgot about the streak when he pinch hit for Jeter in the seventh. ``I apologized,'' Torre said. ``He said, `I wasn't going to catch him, anyway,''' a reference to Joe DiMaggio's record 56-game streak. Then Torre found out that Jeter's streak continued under the rules. Jeter, whose .346 average is second in the AL to Minnesota's Joe Mauer (.348), can't avoid the streak these days. [/ QUOTE ] But Yankee haters will chose to think the worst... [/ QUOTE ]My response to all of this is simply "Who cares?". Just seems like people making a story out of nothing. |

Re: Derek Jeter -- hitting streak over?
Hitting streaks get a lot of media play. Not quite sure why, but they do.
I still don't understand the rule, and I'm a big Jeter and Yankee fan. Jeter played and came to the plate four times yesterday. He didn't get a hit. Consecutive game on-base streak alive. Consecutive game hitting streak over. |

Re: Derek Jeter -- hitting streak over?
Does anyone else think that its really wierd that the MLB has documented official guidelines pertaining to consecutive game hitting streaks?

According to Torre
Torre says he forgot about the hitting streak when he pulled Jeter. And that Jeter said not to worry about it, he wasn't going to catch Dimaggio anyway. Both claim that they didn't know the rule that the streak would still be alive when Torre pinch-hit for Jeter.

Re: According to Torre
I'm a soft core Yankee hater, and I doubt Torre is telling the truth -- but I really don't see the big deal here.

Re: According to Torre
I'll start caring about hit streaks when somebody gets to 40.

Re: Derek Jeter -- hitting streak over?
No, streak continues. See TMTTR's quotation of the relevant rule.

Re: Derek Jeter -- hitting streak over?
Does anybody know when this rule was added? I know it isn't super recent because I remember hearing about it a few years ago when someone had a streak going, but it seems like it has to be post-Dimaggio at least.
