I talked myself into a call here because I could not bring myself to believe that he would tell me the truth in this situation. I think maybe I was losing patience and wanted to either get some chips or go home. So even though I knew that there were very few hands that I could beat I called anyway. In hindsight, I think I was very lucky that he only had Q9.

Are you trying to say that you as a poker player are unable to gain information every time you bet into someone? This is a ridiculous hand in the first place.

My first time playing in Vegas a while ago. I had a friendly guy sit to my left in a 2/5 game. He was a dealer, broke down the soft and crooked games in town. Very good guy. So I open from the button with AQs, he jams from the SB. He was kinda short, and I was obviously doing the pot math.

He gives me a genuine look and says, "save your money". Not in an intimidating way, I believed him and folded. He flashed AA after. Later, he admitted that he had seen AA cracked way too much, and the 25$ pot was enough for him. I like making friends at the table, I do it b/c I enjoy myself more. But lately I have realized that it is +EV as well. I dont think I could pull off the antagonizing bully well.

I'd fold.
There are tons of hands (including marginal PF raising hands) ahead of you here.

Why the hell did you cold call this preflop? Look at the tough spot you are in now. Fold because you are most likely beat.

results oriented. calling shouldnt be standard, but certainly isnt terrible. reraising is better, generally, for obvious reasons, but everyone should be able to mix it up.

bucktotal, you're also beating 72o. i was trying to be realistic.

I agree that you need to mix it up some times but I think in this situation it is terrible. You are below average chip stack but not desperate and a big stack is the preflop raiser plus 3 left to act, calling gives you no info. On any semi-scary flop the big stack should put you to tough decision, and with just an over pair you need to lay it down. And when you lay it down now you are short stacked. I just don't think below average chips is the time to try to slow play AA against a big stack.

i think its precisely the right time, to be honest. gamble a little bit to try and win a big pot when you need one to get back in contention.
