Thanks for returning. You're insight has been missed.

Care to provide a few examples of what a "true" raise/fold situation should be?

Great 33 hand. I wonder why Ray Zee says why not just call the river.

Dunno, but I would've lost the hand if I did.

Now that I've read through, what were the results of that hand?

With respect to the thread that really is a good example of a raise/fold situation. IMO they come up when several things line up. We've been bet into, we think we have the bettor beat, we think someone left to ask has us beat, and we think they'll fold for two cold but not one. Frequently in these kinds of spots it's not 50/50 raise/fold either. One is usually preferred, but the unique part comes in in that they are both very much preferred to calling.

I never posted the results, but I raised, the person behind me hemmed and hawed and finally folded QJs face up while whining, and the SB turbomucked and I won.

Even people that talk about raise or fold probably call more then they let on.

But, if you are calling, you are simply "hoping" to win. That's the way I see it anyway. In the heat of battle the +EV or -EV gets lost in the fog of war sometimes.

If you think you have the best hand or a good draw to the best hand you raise, but ya, most of the time you don't have either. Call.

Sometimes it's more +EV to call than to raise. If you know your opponent is either bluffing and will likely fold to a raise, or he is not bluffing and likely 3-bet your raise, it's often better to just call. Especially if you think you are quite likely ahead. wa/wb is a classic example. Also for strong draws it's sometimes better to just call and let people in instead of raising people out.
