Re: motorcycle Suggestions
[ QUOTE ]
So, after I have graduated into better bikes is there any particular ones I should be looking at? [/ QUOTE ] The Suzuki GSXR 1000 is the gold standard when it comes to sport bikes. Avoid the Katana. It's junk. You can find a ton of good used 600cc sport bikes to start out with. Don't worry it's not too much bike. |

Re: motorcycle Suggestions
A modern 600 is WAY too much bike for a beginner that has never been on one. Katanas are junk. And for that reason are fantastic for beginners.

Re: motorcycle Suggestions
I disagree. I know people who have never ridden a motorcycle in their life, including one female, who started out on a 600 and had no problems.

Re: motorcycle Suggestions

Do yourself a favor, buy a used, ugly 250, not a sport bike, just a regular old motor cycle. You can probably find something for $500-1,000. Take classes, get your license, ride it around for six months. I know it'll hurt your ego a bit, but it's for the best. Then you can go out and buy a monster and not worry about crashing in your first week of owning a 10-15K motorcycle. Here's a few potential bikes I'd consider for someone to learn to ride... Re: motorcycle Suggestions
Here's a list of good, used beginner bikes (that are also "standards")
Yamaha Maxim, 1981-1985 or so Honda Shadow, early '80s-current Honda Magna, early '80s-90s Yamaha Virago, mid '80s Honda Rebel (only a 250) Suzuki GS500 Just check your local craigslist, there are probably hundreds of bikes posted daily. Look at pictures. Then, when you're ready for a "nicer" bike, get one of the following: Thruxton 900 Ducati Monster Suzuki SV650 |

I don't own a bike, but I wish I had a dual-sport BMW 650 "Dakar"

MSF Safety course first, then you can make an intelligent choice once you've learned something. You can thank me later.

If you've got decent hand-eye and you're not a maniac you shouldn't have any trouble. [/ QUOTE ] This is really wrong. If you don't take lessons or read a few books and take a very slow learning curve, you are extrememly likely to drop the bike. Jump on the bike to take a quick run to the store. Its not far so i dont need any gear just shorts and a shirt, maybe even no helmet cause its only a few blocks. This has the added bonus of the chicks being able to get a good look at me on my hot bike. So im going, and here comes a red light, i brake a little but instead use some gearing to slow down. OOPS revs were too high, back tire locks, i'm down and under that parked car. Maybe if you're lucky you're okay and only a few thousand in damage to the bike. Plastic gets really expensive really quick, and good luck with your next insurance premiums. Not sure how many of the states are mandatory helmets but not wearing one is an absolute death wish. When i was in Alaska 80% were not wearing them. This is absolutely idiotic (I guess its an American thing). Here is a thread very similar to yours. First bike rJ_ |

[/ QUOTE ] If you're just tooling around a small town I see no reason to wear one, but if you'r getting on a highway or driving in any sort of traffic I think it's a must. |
